Chairman’s Update: January 2012

As many of you will be aware the Patient Reference Group has been meeting with the doctors to discuss practice developments and following the recent questionnaire you have signalled that the 0800 phone number was the main concern.

There is no easy answer to this as there are pros and cons with whatever system is in place. However we have discussed the concerns with the doctors and due to meet them again in February to hopefully agree an Action Plan to address the problems.

We will keep you informed and, in the meantime, would welcome any other ideas you may have to develop the services at the practice.

Outbreak of Salmonella Newport

Whooping cough cases increase

Cases of whooping cough (pertussis) reported to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in England and Wales have more than doubled from 421 cases in 2010 to 1040 in 2011. The practice nurses work in close liaison with the doctors. They conduct their own surgeries and carry out routine blood tests, holiday vaccinations and other immunisations, ECGs, blood pressure checks, cervical smear tests, chronic disese clinics and Healthy Heart Checks, dressings and removal of stitches. They will also offer help and advice on diet, exercise, healthy living, family planning etc. Appointments with the nurses are made via the receptionists by telephoning 0844 477 3530 or calling at the surgery.

Reception

The receptionists are fully trained and have a very difficult job to do. Please remember that if you are kept waiting or are asked some apparently irritating questions, this is due to our policy aimed towards the smooth and safe running of the practice. We need to ascertain the urgency of some requests and sometimes have to spend longer with a patient than was first anticipated. Please be patient.
